On Saturday, September 9, 19-year-old Coco Gauff won the US Women’s Tennis Open. Gauff defeated her opponent, Aryna Sabalenka, with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 lead. Gauff is the youngest American to win the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999, and the first American to win a title since Sofia Lenin in 2020 at the Australian Open. After her match Gauff lay on the court and shed tears of celebration before hugging her opponent and then running through the stands to her parents. Despite her young age, Gauff is a prominent figure in tennis since Wimbledon in 2019 when she reached the fourth round as a then 15-year-old. Currently, Coco Gauff is ranked in third place of the Women’s Tennis Association.
