Did you know more than 383,000 students have experienced gun violence since the Columbine mass shooting in 1999? Some are covered nationally, while others are covered locally. Ever since 2018, the rate of school shootings has been steadily increasing. The latest one happened at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia on Wednesday Morning. A 14-year-old student opened fire killing two of his classmates and two teachers. Nine more people were injured and are hospitalized.
Not only did this shooting affect neighboring schools and communities, but it also affected the whole nation. It’s even affected students at our very own high school. Hillcrest student, Talia Cyrulik, 10th, shared her thoughts on this horrible event. She shared how anxious she felt hearing the news knowing how something like this can happen anywhere. Talia also shares how these shootings are becoming more common. When asked what we can do as students to help prevent shootings, she expressed how if we could just be more nice to each other we wouldn’t have to even think about doing horrible things to one another. This dreadful event shows that the ones present and the entire school community are hurt.
