Marlayna McBride breaks School Record
Marlayna McBride, a soon to be Hillcrest High School graduate, record breaking athlete, outstanding student and an amazing peer. Marlayna McBride is an overall eye catcher of a young lady. Starting sports young at the age of 6 she started playing tennis and then later in her high school career with the guidance of her mom began participating in track and field as a jumper. With her favorite sport being tennis at first she began seeing her love for track and jumping and started to really pursue a future there. The start was rough with her getting injured really early into her first year. However, she focused on recovering and growing her craft, and well into her second year of track began breaking records and doing numbers on her competitors. She was Region High Jump and Long Jump Champion, All Region Athlete in Tripler Jump and broke a Hillcrest High Record in Long Jump with a 39ft 9in jump as well as being Player Of The Week on Milesplit.
Now, with all this achievement how does she become a record breaking athlete and still be an attentive student? Surprisingly her answer was that she really doesn’t know. “And honestly, I’m not sure how I balance sports, work and school so well but I just try to evenly split my time up,” Marlayna says after being asked how she juggles school and sports. So what kind of student is Marlayna? Well it’s just the same as everything else; she’s an amazing one. With an outstandingly high GPA of a 4.7 and taking more than one college class, she still manages to perform extremely well at all of her extracurriculars, such as being a participate in the National Honors Society, The Black and Brown Student Union, being captain of her tennis team and president of BQH. In hopes of going to North Carolina A & T college for track, she works hard to keep up those grades and to keep making progress on the track. So what are Marlyana’s goals jumping into this up and coming senior year track season? She plans on breaking yet another long jump recorded that is only one foot away and winning state, and knowing this young lady’s abilities and her long list of wins, this will be yet another victory in her book.
