The Oscars have long been one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry, recognizing outstanding achievements in cinematography, acting, and musical performances. This year’s ceremony was filled with stunning musical moments, heartfelt speeches, and even some unexpected disappointments—especially for fans here at Hillcrest.
One of the most highly anticipated films of the year, Wicked, had generated massive buzz leading up to the awards. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the film was expected to take home multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing, Best Sound, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. With over 700 million dollars invested in production, fans were confident Wicked would dominate the night. However, by the end of the evening, the film walked away with only two wins: Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell and Best Production Design for Lee Sandales and Nathan Crowley.
Fans all over the internet expressed disappointment at Wicked’s limited wins, and Hillcrest students had plenty to say about it as well. Lara Rogers, a freshman at Hillcrest, shared her frustration: “It breaks my heart to see a movie that was so nationally known and wonderful be overlooked by films I’ve never even heard of.”
Another notable response from students here at Hillcrest came from a junior, Ella. She says, “I think that more things should have been recognized, like costume design, music, makeup, hair, and acting. So much effort and heart were poured into making that movie and inspiring dreams for everyone of all ages. It teaches people in a special way, through a complicated journey, that we should learn to understand others rather than judge them. Differences can be beautiful and powerful, and sometimes you need to rise above your issues. It deserved more recognition for so many things and so many reasons, but I also greatly support the other things that were nominated and won because I know they put in so much effort too!”
Beyond Wicked, the Oscars had several standout moments. Adam Sandler, a longtime comedy legend, finally received long-overdue recognition, winning the Best Actor award for his role in Spaceman. His heartfelt acceptance speech had the audience laughing and tearing up, as he thanked his fans for sticking with him throughout his career.
Another major highlight of the night was Billie Eilish and Finneas winning Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie. Their emotional performance left many in the audience in tears, making it one of the most talked-about moments of the night.
As expected, Oppenheimer was a big winner, taking home Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. The film’s powerful storytelling and gripping cinematography cemented its place as one of the biggest films of the year. Robert Downey Jr. took home Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film, marking a significant career milestone after years of blockbuster success in the Marvel franchise.
Taylor Swift, though not nominated for any Oscars this year, still found herself in the spotlight. She attended the ceremony alongside her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, and the two were seen celebrating the wins of close friends in the industry. Their appearance quickly became a trending topic online, as Swift continues to dominate both music and pop culture.
The night was also packed with stunning performances, heartfelt speeches, and some unexpected wins. While Wicked fans may have been disappointed, the ceremony still delivered unforgettable moments. Whether it was historic victories, shocking snubs, or viral red carpet moments, this year’s Oscars kept audiences talking long after the final award was handed out.
With awards season coming to an end, fans are already looking ahead to next year’s biggest contenders. Will Wicked Part Two get its redemption arc? Will new films rise to the occasion and sweep the Oscars? Only time will tell, but for now, film lovers everywhere will continue debating this year’s wins, losses, and biggest surprises.
