Since the passing of Youth in Government in the fall, two students, Alex Lynes and Sawyer Beamish, have been working to create an opportunity for Hillcrest students interested in the formation of bills to continue their passion. On February 26th, Mock Congress held its first interest meeting, with another scheduled for March 5th in Dr. Causey’s room, 333.
The Mock Congress club is open to all 9th–12th grade students. It is an after-school activity focused on the creation, presentation, and passage of bills. Alongside your peers, you will learn how to write a bill, what makes a strong bill, and how to craft a successful proposal to present in the fall at Youth in Government (YIG) in Columbia. Students will have the opportunity to draft bills that could be officially presented at the South Carolina State House next fall, or even humorous or joke-centered bills for the club to debate and vote on.
In this club, you will present bills in a mock chamber and learn the procedures a presiding officer would use, including time limits and questioning periods. This interactive and engaging experience is great for students at all levels of interest in law. Many students at Hillcrest are already excited about the club. Co-founder Sawyer Beamish shared, “It’s a great experience for people wanting an intro to law fundamentals.” New club member Kayla Mosby added, “It’s a great opportunity for students to share their opinions and learn about government.”
Great start to this new club!
