Ms. Emmons is known for being super friendly and having a laugh everywhere she goes. In fact, many of her former students still keep in touch with her! She is a cheerful teacher with many stories to share! As usual, Rampage asked Ms. Emmons four unique questions. Here’s what she had to say!
Our first question: What’s your favorite grade level to teach?
“I have a bachelor’s in elementary education and early childhood; when I went to school, I was going to teach third grade. When I was in second grade, my teacher read The Lorax to me, and I had decided I was going to save the planet- like, we are saving the trees. When I got to third grade, I had Mrs. Schwartz, and Mrs. Schwartz had hair that did not move- she had so much hairspray… She was probably, I don’t know, late fourties maybe? Man, I wanted to be just like her… I taught kindergarten, first, fourth, fifth, and sixth, and I taught third grade for six years. Out of elementary school, the age that was my favorite is third grade. They’re still precious but not snarky; They get sarcasm but they’re not too cool for school yet… When it comes to high school, I’ve taught ninth, eleventh, and twelfth. And I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know which one is my favorite- like, having juniors at the beginning of the year? Love it. Having seniors at the beginning of the year? Love it… Teaching ninth grade, and then getting to teach them again is so fun!”
Question two: Is there a staff member you’re good friends/a duo with?
“One of my duos would be Mr. Eversole; I don’t know if they just can’t handle us, or if they don’t know what to do with us, but in any meeting or group they cut the Es right off behind my name or whatever so we have to be seperate. I don’t know, it might just be a number thing, but even our mailboxes are seperated! Mr. Eversole, whenever we get together it’s just crazy.”
We next asked: What’s the worst trend you’ve seen while you’ve been teaching?
“One thing I don’t really like that’s not so much a trend is people just being on their phones whenever they wanted to, and having the one Airpod in, they can’t hear you… I also really didn’t like the whole devious lick thing. Kids would be walking out bathrooms with mirrors and doors, breaking all my stuff, it made me so mad!”
And finally: What’s your favorite part of the school year?
“I think in first semester I probably would say in September to, like Thanksgiving break. But this year, with my juniors and seniors, probably since around the second week of school, I have fun, we have conversations, they actually want to be there. Second semester, I hate beginning of the year. It’s like, let’s set up this page, let’s set up the notebook, and I just want to get to it. It’s like having the first day of school twice… Spirit week is fun, it’s crazy, but now that I don’t teach an EOC, I actually enjoy spirit week a lot more since I’m not cramming to stay on schedule… I’d say spirit week through around mid-May is fun, because then it turns into seat time, and finals, and everyone is ready to leave.”
Most things Ms. Emmons responded with was with a chuckle and a smile, and she is a fun and welcoming teacher to everyone. She has a lot of stories about her life, but she will happily talk with you about anything! If you ever want someone to go hang out with, Ms. Emmons is a great choice!
