Sabrina Carpenter’s highly anticipated sixth studio album, “Short n’ Sweet,” is here! But did the rest of the album meet the expectations set by the sweet and sugary ‘Espresso’ and moody, yet upbeat ‘Please Please Please’?
The album is full of humorous and playful pop tracks that share the same vibe as her previous summer hits. For instance, ‘Taste’, the first track on the album’s first line is, “Oh I leave quite the impression/ Five feet to be exact”, this is a nod to the singer’s short stature and immediately informs the listener of the light and not too serious tone the album takes. One thing I found surprising is how guitar-forward the album is. Most of the songs on the album, like “Dumb & Poetic,” and “Lie to Girls”, have acoustic guitars either in the background or on full display. This helps the album not sound too generic or bubblegum. When asked if he would recommend the album, Brice Dove, an award-winning chorus member and music enthusiast responded, “Overall, yes, if you’re looking for something that’s confessional this probably isn’t the place to go… if you go into it expecting confessional, serious songwriting you’re not going to get that, but if you keep your expectations in check then yeah I think, you’ll have fun.” I have to agree, this album is meant for easy listening, not intense analysis. My only qualm with the album is the length, the album is aptly named with six of the twelve songs totaling under three minutes. This left me wanting more, with a few songs feeling like they ended just before they got the chance to reach their full potential.
Overall, I give the album a 6.5/10, the album lived up to my expectation of fun, candied, syrupy pop, but just like candy, it didn’t quite fill me up, and I was left wanting more.
