The 2024 South Carolina Republican Primary was held on this past Saturday, February 24th. After polls closed that evening, the race was called for former president Donald Trump, who beat former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley with a 20-point lead. Trump received around 60% of the vote and Haley received around 40%. The primary in South Carolina was an open primary, meaning that voters did not have to be registered Republicans in order to vote. Because this type of primary allows non-republican voters, unlike a caucus, it is more representative of the general election in November.
There have been 5 Republican primaries so far in Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and the US Virgin Islands. Although Donald Trump has won every primary so far, Nikki Haley has vowed not to drop out of the race. The next primary is in Michigan on February 27th, followed by the caucuses in Michigan, Idaho, and Missouri.
