Those who know about the Chicago rat hole are certainly intrigued, and those who don’t quickly become curious. The rat hole’s fame has even made it to Hillcrest, with freshman Caroline Davis sharing, “I think the Chicago rat hole is very cool and unique.” The general consensus of the hole in concrete is an overwhelming love and celebration, however, some of Chicago’s residents find the behavior irritating. The sidewalk containing the rat hole was recently popularized through social media, with locals and tourists flocking to it with gifts. These offerings include things such as cheese, toys, and flowers. There have even been weddings at the rat hole! While the recent response to the site is mostly positive, some dislike what’s become of it. In late January of this year, the hole was filled in with cement. Thankfully, it was dug out, however, the recent rise in commotion leaves many local residents irritated and taking to other forms of vandalism. Because of this, the slab of concrete containing the Chicago rat hole may potentially be sold, with many local businesses willing to buy it. Whatever its fate is, the Chicago rat hole has certainly left its rat-shaped impression on the hearts of many!
