Since 2022, there has been talk of building another cult classic Buc-ee’s gas station in South Carolina. The multi-million company already owns land in Anderson County. However, before construction can begin, several million dollars worth of interstate improvements are necessary. Anderson County staff are already preparing for the tax base and increased traffic that the new gas station will bring. Traffic from I-85, especially exit 21 and Liberty Highway, is already extremely congested, often backing up onto the interstate. Therefore, improvements were necessary whether the new gas station was coming or not. Anderson is looking at $60 million just for interstate repairs, which includes a whole new configuration of access and exit ramps. When asked, an anonymous Hillcrest student expressed, “A new Buc-ee’s would be cool, but having the interstate under construction again is going to be very annoying. It seems almost pointless since the new gas station would just cause so much more traffic.” I-85 has already been under construction for a few years with the widening project, which is expected to end by 2025, so the continued construction will be annoying. It was confirmed that the anticipated Buc-ee’s will be 74,000 square feet, making it the largest in the chain alongside one in Tennessee. The Buc-ee’s in Anderson is expected to be open to the public by 2026.
