On January 6, former President Donald Trump beat hopeful Republican candidate Nikki Haley in the New Hampshire Republican Primary with an 11% margin, thus tightening his grasp as the Republican nominee for the 2024 election. When asked, seniors at Hillcrest High School had heard about the results and understood what they meant. By winning the Primaries in both states, Trump has proved his ability to unite the Republican Party firmly behind him. He gained the support of the evangelical conservatives who are influential in Iowa and New Hampshire, whereas Haley was not able to rally the more moderate voters. After DeSantis ended his campaign, Haley is the sole competitor to Trump, and has escalated her disapproval of the former President by questioning his mental state and portraying herself as a unifying and determined candidate. Although Haley did not win, she assured her supporters that she would continue to run and saw the outcome as a victory. According to Haley’s campaign coordinators, she has raised $2.6 million since losing to Trump, but she has been publicly ridiculed by the former president who believes she is not a true Republican. Now, Haley has been actively rallying support in South Carolina, her home state, as she gears up for the Republican primary in February. Although it is her home state, South Carolina is deeply conservative and has voted Trump for in multiple past elections.
