I’m going to work out more! I’m going to pursue romance! New year, new me! I, along with many other thousands of people, make New Year’s resolutions to ring in the new year with new habits. However, the question “are New Year’s Resolutions overrated?” has crossed my mind, so I decided to poll the student body.
I sent out a google form to several people, a total of 118 students of various grades. I wanted to know what people’s thoughts on resolutions really were.
Five options were given for the most overrated New Years Resolution. The winner of the title “most overrated” was “start working out/going to the gym”, winning at 36.4%. Next but not far behind was “quit social media/lower screen time” at 28.8% and third place was “eating healthier” with 15.3%.
Several people also stated that “New year, new me” is overrated because it is too broad and not achievable.
Almost exactly half of the people polled said they make New year’s Resolutions (51.7%), but of that only 7.6% of people polled said they stuck with their resolutions. 33.1% of people were right down the middle on whether or not they stuck to their New Year’s resolutions. 17.8% said never, 18.6% said almost never/maybe, and 22.9 percent said almost always.
Some of the results were unexpected, but it was clear that many of the most popular New Years resolutions are overrated.
