Within the past few years, multiple shopping websites have risen and gained popularity for mostly the same thing: having almost anything at a ridiculously low price. One of these websites is TEMU. TEMU gained traction quickly through TikTok, mostly with people sharing codes to get free items and discounts. Similar sites, such as SHEIN, have had skeptics explaining why they shouldn’t be trusted or purchased from. Some of these past controversies have been things like child labor and worker mistreatment, however the most recent includes an insane violation of user privacy. A class action lawsuit has begun against TEMU for using malware to record the camera and microphone of allegedly anyone who downloads the app or goes on their website, even when not using them. It’s been said that TEMU is tracking other app activity and cut corners on security so as to take financial information from users as well. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) received over 900 complaints of unauthorized transactions after using TEMU. Not much has come from this lawsuit, however it is certainly a reminder that not all deals are worth it and to be careful where your information is going.
