September is Hispanic Heritage Month so Hillcrest held its second annual Hispanic Heritage celebration this last week. The main events were held in the common area during all lunches. Music flooded the cafeteria as students waited in line to buy Hispanic snacks and food. Tacos were the best-seller during the fundraiser but students also sold a variety of snacks and other small dishes. Hillcrest students were also encouraged to participate by dressing up. Traditional clothing was worn by a plethora of students throughout the week; each was a gesture of support and celebration.
Friday was favorite celebrity day and many people dressed up as pop culture icons including, but not limited to: Taylor Swift, Adam Sandler, Ronaldo, Messi, and Keanu Reeves. Posters were also put up around the school denoting famous Hispanic icons. Cultural staples like Frida Kahlo have inspired generations of people and their work continues to live on through movements such as Hispanic Heritage Month.
Students loved the activities during the week, many Spanish classes partook in some volunteering or celebration as well. Mrs. Gonzalez could be seen managing the festivities during lunches, making sure everything ran smoothly. Other Spanish teachers had special lessons for their students to inspire and promote the week. Lessons ranged from speaking in Spanish about a cultural icon to creating decorations for the bash.
Students were asked what their favorite part of Hispanic Heritage Week was and all responses were overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Mia Zunica-Rampos was quoted as saying, “I love joining in on all the fun and celebrating my culture. It really inspires me and I hope it does to others too.” Students like these are the main driving force behind Hillcrest’s community and livelihood.
