My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a Rom-Com that was released in 2002. The first movie was about a woman named Toula being pressured to marry by her Greek family because she is past the age when most women marry according to that culture. Toula gets her life together and meets a man she falls in love with. An only child with quiet parents, he is sent into a culture shock when he meets Toulas’ giant Greek family.
In the second movie, the couple has a child who is in high school. The second movie is about Toula and her husband navigating the whole college application process and learning how to be ok with their daughter moving to a college far away.
The third movie starts with a discussion about Toulas fathers death. She and several family members have decided to go to Greece- they were invited to a reunion in Toulas fathers old village, and his dying wish was for his journal to reach his old friends back in Greece. When the family arrived, they realized that there was no actual reunion, and that it was a plot to get people to repopulate the old village. However, the mayor of said village is convinced that many will come for this fake reunion, so the whole week they prepare. Towards the end of the movie, Toula is growing desperate because she hasn’t found any trace of her fathers old friends and she wants to do this thing for him. She calls some of her cousins for help and within the next 24 hours they find all three of the fathers friends and bring them to the village for the reunion (which, very unexpectedly, had a huge turnout).
The movie was surprisingly very good, making a come-back after a not so great sequel to the first movie. I have always loved the dynamic this family has. While my family is not nearly as big as Toulas, I have a lot of cousins and always love being in a room surrounded by all of my extended family. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 was a great conclusion to this trilogy and is a great representation of family and love.
