So what is Speech and Debate? Speech and Debate is pretty much public speaking but of course, you do debate if you choose to compete in debate. Why did I say if you choose to compete? Well, debate is one category while speech isn’t since there are 17 categories to choose from. For example, in speech, you have Dramatic Interpretation which is where you either read or memorize your piece and there are parts that you need to express the emotion within your piece, or Informative speaking which is where you explain something to someone else.
These are just some examples but now that you have a bit of understanding about speech and debate, let’s talk about how Mr. Evans teaches his students. First starters, we got to choose the piece that we wanted to use in the competition but if you can’t find a piece, he would help you find a piece. Once we chose a piece, we went out in the hallway and practiced our speech and then he would talk to us about how are we doing with our speech. We also present our speech to the class and he gives us tips on what to improve on. Everyone in the class or people who come after school to practice their speech has to be double-entered so that you have a higher chance of winning points for the team and you can earn 25 points to be in the National Speech and Debate team which for seniors, they can get a cord to wear at graduation.
You can also talk to Mr. Evans for any questions anyone might have about Speech and debate after school in room 316.
