A New “Lofi Boy” Makes a Synthy Entrance!

“Lo-fi” or “low-fidelity” (low quality) music is a relaxing, homemade concoction of jazz, hip-hop, electronic, boom-bap, and funk music. Considered a subgenre of either electronic or hip-hop, Lo-fi is perfect for chilling and studying and is completed with a natural background ambiance that soothes the brain. And with the help of the late influential musician Nujabes, we now have the current sound of Lo-fi today. So, how did what was once an underground niche genre become so mainstream? The “ChilledCow” or “Lofi Girl” record label is the simple answer. Their thousand-hour-long streams have made chilling and studying Lo-fi music a global phenomenon. What they’ve also made a global phenomenon is the beloved face of the company: the Lofi Girl. 

It is safe to say that the Lofi Girl has been very influential in music and internet culture. But what happens when a new character is introduced to the Lofi universe? Insert Lofi Boy! Lofi Boy is the latest installment to the “Lofi Girl” streams and contrasts her warm and cozy setup with a neon, blue, and purple, almost videogame-like layout. Another noticeable difference between the two is their taste in music! The new Lofi Boy is a fan of “Synthwave” or chill synth-wave, a retro-futuristic micro-electronic genre, and is most known for its existence in Sci-fi. 

Hopefully, with the Lofi Boy’s new existence, the synth-wave genre gets the recognition it deserves as Lo-fi did!
