Hijab Protests In Iran

Bonnie-Marie Allmendinger, Staff Reporter

In September of 2022, a young woman in Iran, Mahsa Amini, was arrested by Iran’s morality police for improperly wearing her hijab. Amini was severely beaten by the police, and three days later died still in their custody. Amini’s death sparked riots and protests throughout Iran regarding the mandatory hijab rule, and many women have refused to wear a headscarf. Due to the increasing amount of protests, Iran’s capital punishment rate has spiked by 75% with the government hoping to spark fear among the citizens. Iranian police have also set up confidential cameras to catch women who aren’t wearing hijabs.
