Will America BAN Tik Tok (this time)?!?
April 11, 2023
First and Foremost, Tik Tok is NOT banned as of this moment (April 10). But, because of the constant news on the subject matter, many need clarification about the state of TikTok and if it will stay…
This situation started when the Biden administration saw potential mishandling of TikTok users’ data from the Chinese company “ByteDance,” AP News says. AP News also states that the people of “Congress, the White House, U.S. armed forces and more than half of U.S. states had already banned TikTok,” more than likely fearing the misuse of their information. Others, like Canada, Denmark, and even the European Union’s executive branch, have made their disdain for the platform transparent and plan to ban TikTok for good.
Along with security precautions, mental health concerns are also quite worrying. Our youth can spend hours scrolling through their favorite creators’ content. But, some studies show that many are not doing more harm than good to their mental health. A study from the Center of Countering Digital Hate reported that 13.2 billion views went to eating disorder content. And when new TikTok accounts were made, suicide content was also recommended only 2.6 minutes in.
TikTok is innovative, creative, helpful, and informative. Half of your articles here have used TikTok as a focal point. But that doesn’t mean TikTok can’t be a harmful platform. We, as a collective, should start being more mindful of our internet surroundings.
