A Black History Week of Celebration at HHS!

Camille Jenkins, Staff Writter

Black History Month celebrates past and current black figures worldwide and critical black contributions to history and culture. What did HHS do for Black History Month, you may ask? Well, the Black Student Union hosted a BHM celebration week, fit with Afro-American music, traditional Afro-American food from black-owned businesses (Mac and cheese, banana pudding, tea and lemonade, and basketball-themed cookies), and themed days to dress up accordingly. On the first Tuesday, the theme was “Pan-Africanism,” in which people wore the colors of Pan-Africanism (red, black, green). On Wednesday, the theme was “Sunday Brunch,” where students wore their Sunday best to school. Thursday was “J’s,” or Jordan’s day, where many wore their nicest Jordan Shoes. Friday was a “Rep Your HBCU” day, where you could wear your HBCU’s colors, Monday was “Melanin Monday,” wear you would dress in many different shades of brown, and Tuesday was “Throw Back (80s/90s Hip Hop),” where students dressed in 80s and 90s-styled clothes based on hip hop artists of the time. It brings me, and other black students happiness seeing BHM represented in our school.
