Happy Veterans day!

Abbey Maloy, Staff Reporter

Veterans Day, also known as Armistice day, started in Birmingham, Alabama 68 years ago. Always celebrated on the 11th of November, Veterans day was created to celebrate the end of WW1, which ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day in an effort to recognize all veterans. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans, living or dead, but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. One way to celebrate Veterans day is to celebrate with service. Show service members your gratitude throughout the year with a home-cooked meal, thank you note, or day of volunteering, or support veteran-owned businesses. You can participate in an event honoring veterans happening in many cities this Veterans Day. Simpsonville is holding a ceremony at Veterans Corner from 11:00am-12:00pm. There will also be a Veterans Day Parade in downtown Walhalla starting at 4:30pm.
