What is your dog really thinking? What goes on behind those big puppy eyes, and that little tail wag, and what does it mean when they zoom in circles for an hour? Ever since the beginning of domesticating dogs, cats, birds, and fish, these are the questions that are being asked around the globe and right here at Hillcrestt.
For example, do you think your pet understands words? Many people believe our furry friends naturally know our language. They understand every “hello,” every “who’s a good boy,” and every “who wants a treat.” Others believe that dogs don’t have the brain capabilities to understand our language, as it’s too complex for them, and some are even in the dead middle of this issue.
In an interview, freshman Lara Rodgers said, “I don’t think dogs understand my words, they just like to, you know, chase their tails and have fun.” Lara explained that most dogs don’t seem to have the same capabilities as humans.
Another question commonly asked is, do animals have emotions? Many people believe their pets’ emotions are just as great as human ones. They whine and cry when they are sad, they wag their tails, jump, and chirp when they are happy, and maybe rip up a pillow or two when they are mad. However, there are people even here at Hillcrest that believe animals don’t have the same complex emotion and expression that humans do,
Another student at Hillcrest, Amelia Colon said, “I think dogs are just like people, they feel and know everything just the same amount as us so we have to respect them as so.”
In conclusion, we don’t know what animals think. Although the strange people on MTV might claim they are dog whispers, I guess we really will never know what dogs think about us. Maybe we need a new website: XOXO, gossip dog.
